We gathered under a scattered cloudy sky and mild temperatures
looking for the driveway into our motel. Some went to the other
Comfort Inn across town and were redirected to the proper one across
from the VA hospital.
Several board members were absent. Bill is too ill to travel,
Karen is campaigning for the Washington State Assembly, Lois was
ill. Items of board action including appointing Louise to fill out
Alan's term as executive vice president, appointing a library committee,
authorizing three scholarships, etc.
There was a bit of anxiety as a sign at the train station said it
would not be running this weekend. And (Kay) was not certain if the
speaker for the program would show. (The train had been shut down
because of an accident the week before.)
(John Rogers)showed up in a
railroad cap and was very entertaining with his humor as he related
the story of Daniel Willard. As a young man Daniel had been shanghaied
onto a ship and went around the world. Later as a gandydancer he started
up the ladder that ultimately led to his presidency of the Baltimore and
Ohio Railroad at its heyday. You can read much more of the details of Daniel Willard's life at:

And yes, we did get our train ride in spite
of the sign. We filled a car and went up the river all the way to Thetford
with the whistle blowing and passerbys waving.(Train)
Kudos for a job very well done Kay, Marjorie, Trudy and all others
who had a part in the planning of this event.
If you took pictures and are willing to share them, please send them to
Rodney and they will be posted here.
